Denice Barton began driving her bird dogs hitched to a Red Rider wagon at the age of 9. (See story in notes on her facebook.) She has been driving professionally in Fort Worth, Dallas, McKinney, East Texas and Northern California for 24 years. She trained and helped others train for competition. Today Denice is an accomplished rider and driver. She trained under many notable drivers. Her most accomplished trainer was Charles T. Smith whose passion was to win Combined Driving Events with a pair of un-recognized warmbloods. He taught Denice that the horse does not do anything wrong- it is always “Driver Error”.
She was taught to cooperate with the horse, “You can never ‘make’ a 2,000 lb animal do anything.”
Her trainers also include, Kendra McCarty-Lewkow, former driver/manager for Dallas Surrey Service, first female driver/hitch manager for Budweiser Clydesdales. Trainer Mike Lewis with Owens Country Sausage – 8 Belgian Hitch was the first to teach Denice that you could not neck rein a driving horse at Brainard’s Carriage Livery in Downtown Fort Worth.
Denice has driven hundreds of different horses. Throughout the course of her career she has ridden everything she was allowed to ride. She has taken English and western lessons for 30 years. Her respect for the horses encouraged her to find any way possible to be with them. This dedication gives her an insight into what drives kids to horses. It makes her happy to help facilitate the love between child and horse. Denice is excited about the future with Bella Oaks and loves the relaxed inviting environment. “It feels like
family.”

Angie Best
Indiana Jones, Animal Camp & Special Programs
Hi, my name is Angie Best and I have lived in Martinez for 20 years, involved in all aspects of child fun since I have a
7 year old and a 17 year old. I have worked as yard duty at John Swett Elementary School for the past 12 years and
currently lead a 1st grade Daisy Troup there! I love working with kids and look forward to working at Bella Oaks this
summer with the Summer Camp program. I look forward to seeing a lot of kids I already know and meeting all of the new ones
I first rode when I was four years old and I remember nearly everything about that day and that ride and I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience – and that enjoyment is what I try and share with people who aren’t familiar with horses.
As I got older, I only rode my mom’s horse on occasion though he wasn’t easy to control so I wasn’t very fond of him, and I was afraid of heights… So I slowly grew out of riding and then horses all together when I was ten years old and I was kicked in the back while leading a horse on the ground. – At that point I was truly scared of horses and wasn’t comfortable even standing near them. It wasn’t until I was fourteen that I met some friends who rode horses; and with that incentive and an unbelievably old but stubborn horse named Whiskey I began to re-learn to ride.
I had a “rocky” start with horses, and I have felt a wide range of feelings about them and I believe that lets me really understand a lot of the anxiety people can feel being around horses. Being able to take people from that point of uncertainty to a point in which they feel confident on and around horses is what gives me the most satisfaction.
I started horse training when I was in high school; my initial interest in behavior modification was spurred in psychology, and then only amplified when I began to read about the accomplishments of trainers like Monty Roberts – who had been studying horse behavior in the wild and building a training style that was compatible with their natural tendencies.
I went straight to Feather River College after high school and through the Equine Sciences Program there, as well as my job as a wrangler at a nearby guest ranch – I found many people and horses to learn from.
Apprenticed with Natural Balance farrier and natural hoof care specialist Marylynne Nicholson for two years before
branching out on my own full time in 2009. I don't consider myself anti-horseshoe, but I look at the issue this way: If
a horse needs a metal splint fixed to his feet to be sound, there's something wrong with his feet. My goal is to fix hoof
pathology through appropriate trimming, nutrition and lifestyle. Many of my clients come to me because they have
tried conventional treatments without success. I find it so rewarding to help these horses. I feel privileged to have the
opportunity to work with these amazing animals! - stronghoof@gmail.com

thousands of horses. Frank is 71 and proud to still be shoeing 3-4 horses a day. Frank is happy to talk with the children
of Bella Oaks Stables when he is there. He loves to share information about his life’s work and passion.

Whether your horse is your friend or has a Job they need their teeth taken care of regularly. The largest of your horses digestion is with their teeth. In order for your horse to get the most out of your grains, forage, and hay, regular dental maintenance is essential. Whether you drive, ride or show in halter classes your horses performance will improve with proper equilibration and bit seats.

Bella Oaks is a little piece of heaven, as I remember from my childhood. I was raised with
horses. My father raised and raced Quarter Horses. We had them in Show, Cutting, and
Reining. He had a breeding ranch with fifty broodmares. We rode across the hills after
school, through ponds for hours up and through Wild Cat Canyon. These were wonderful
times and great memories.
While things and times have changed, I still want other children to have the same
adventures and memories. I have the greatest joy when the ranch is filled with children and
laughter.
The future of Bella Oaks will be a continual upgrading, with camps and adventure, family
time and enjoyment, where it's peaceful except for the sound of laughter.

Saddle up, settle in and here's the 411 about our Saddle Club!
As an ex teacher, local business owner, corp. marketing director, and mother of 4, I am excited to be a part of the Bella Oaks Stables Saddle Club. Our main objective will be to support our kids in this equestrian lifestyle through motivational adventures, educational opportunities, positive friendships, and a huge weekly variety of fun, hands on learning situations with excellent instructors, all centered around horses! We, as parents, need info, calendars and updates, which I will provide also. Our saddle club has room for your brainstorming and fun ideas by parents and kids --for the kids! It is a forum for all of us to share and learn from one another also! Parents bonding over the latest sales on boots, a new movie related to horses, great seminars, swapping gear, horse cookies, or another trip to Happy Trails for bedroom decor and breeches, are just a few brainstorms from our latest chats!
My daughter and her friends (ages 8-15) here at Bella Oaks have blossomed into responsible, confident, and caring young individuals that are completely connected with the horses and want to now pursue more self disciplined higher equestrian goals! I am elated that we left the malls and fashion trends, texting and boy/girl gossip back in the valley, as we are now so totally enveloped in this wholesome connection as apprentices with all of mother nature's beauty here in the peaceful setting of Bella Oaks Stables.

Employment/Apprentice Opportunities
We are always seeking experienced people to work at our facility. If you are qualified and ready to work we will
discuss the possibilities. If you want to get a summer job but just do not have the skills there are two options for you.
You may either join our Counselor in Training Camp to become fully qualified for our camp or many others
including babysitting training and certifications. Secondly, you may if almost ready but not quite, pay $135 a month to
volunteer for a few weeks (lunch included). We will work with you and teach you what we do. You will be involved
with the programs and experience the fun. This is not a guarantee for employment but it does get you one step
closer. Background checks and references are required.
Do not be anxious about
anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to
God.
